“Something else?” She tilted her head a little in confusion, and then just nodded. Heavy on the surprises tonight, wasn’t he? Well, no problem; she liked them rather well so far.
Carefully, she began the climb down to the ground. She let him go first, so that she could find her footing a little easier, and soon she was on the lowest branch, falling down into his reassuring grip and then dusting herself off.
“Okay. Surprise number two. Which is totally uncalled for, Eugene.” It was a playful scolding.
With his feet planted firmly on the ground, he watched her expression for a moment – simply soaking it in. When he believed that she had waited long enough, he breathed in a shaky breath due to the sudden influx of nerves and then reached into his pocket.
He was then down on one knee and as he pulled out the small r i n g, he had a hard time telling if he hadn’t passed out due to how fast his heart was pounding.
When it was presented to her, he cleared his throat and his eyes finally laid on her face as he began to speak ; an air of awkwardness around him for he had never done something like this before.
“–Anna, it’s been r o u g h. There’s been so many ups and downs since I’ve met you, but not one would I take back – because since we went through them, we’re here now.
And I know I’m not a prince nor someone who’s next in line for a throne– I come from a rather shitty background, but despite that, you’ve showed me
L O V E like no one before.
And through the time that we’ve been together and the time that we’ve been apart, I have realized what I want more than anything ; something that money could never buy me,
and that’s spending the rest of my life with you.”
With a smile pushed forward, he continued to look up at her, ring outstretched toward her.
“With all of that being said– will you m a r r y - m e ?”
Anna allowed him to turn her chin up, and as his lips touched her own, she found herself increasingly more thrilled to be at his side. Though it was gentle, she leaned into it and made it a little bit less so. She had wanted to be delicate, but- her passion overrode that.
Pulling away, she bumped her nose playfully against his and grinned as she spoke softly.
“Eugene, let’s go away together. Please. I’ll buy us an unmarked ship. We can live on the seas. Stop on land any time we want. You and I.
At least say you’ll think about it. All I want- is to be with y o u.”
He was content. More than that, he was
h a p p y.
Nothing could ruin this mood, nothing.
Could they do that? Would it be okay? Nobody would be able to find her nor he, so they would both be s a f e, right? Running away together.. just with her, well.. there was nothing else that he wanted. He had found a new dream and it was far more important than the previous dreams of being rich and owning a castle of his own.
He let the thought process for a few, but his mind was already made up. In fact, he was going to suggest something similar before she’d even brought it up.
“—- I have something else for you, actually. But I think I should give it to you on the ground.”
Hearing him, Anna felt a pang through her chest. She knew that it was like, to feel so lonely that you turned to s t a r s to help you. Relying on something so distant, so bright, made her feel watched over, cared for- less alone, sometimes. Other times, more isolated.
“Well,” She smiled, looking over at him with sincerity and adoration in her gaze
“I hope a human addition make you feel too crowded.” For her, at least, the stars were nothing compared to him.
To be honest – her words caught him off guard. It was w e i r d thinking about how he was not alone anymore, but definitely a good kind of weird. He had spent all those years searching for something – someone – that would make him f e e l something..
and now that she was here, it was far too surreal.
A smile came, and then he turned his attention to her face which was lit up by the stars above, one free hand placed underneath her chin as he tilted her head up slightly and then a gentle kiss was pressed to her lips in response.
Upon getting as comfortable as possible, the Princess looked out to the sky at last. Her back had been turned to it the whole time, but now she had a clear and beautiful view of the sky and how glorious it really was from up there. Her mouth fell open a little, and her hands shifted to adjust her cloak absently.
“Wow,” she whispered, almost afraid to break the sweet and calm silence that overtook the atmosphere.
“No, no, it’s- so much better than at the castle.” she murmured. “It’s gorgeous.”
“–if there’s one thing that I wouldn’t take away from my childhood, it’s being able to look up at the sky whenever I wanted to.”
His eyes followed a path of stars as he lost himself in thought for a good while; he felt like he was home.
Yeah, she did not dress for this. Anna had not thought to prepare for such a physical activity as climbing a tree, but she was certainly not going to let this dress stop her. She put on her most determined expression and moved toward him, using his boost and successfully climbing up to that first branch.
Up and up and up, she occasionally found herself laughing with little trips and near-falls. But he was good at this, and she trusted him, and she was having quite the good time.
“How far up are we going?“ she asked with a smile after having moved quite a few feet up.
"Here’s good,”
and when she was on the strong branch, he sat down beside her ; an arm wrapping around her to prevent her from falling.
“–it might not compare to any view that you can get from the castle, but.. I don’t know.
“Oh, yes, terribly.” She laughed a little and turned her head, tilting it upward to kiss his jaw. It was remarkable that she hadn’t jumped out of fright and hit him- that would have been so like her. But she was half-expecting him already, so she guessed that was why she had such luck.
“Now, what’s this surprise you keep teasing me with?” She was quite impatient for it, excited easily as it was, but loving surprises all the more. She placed her hands over his around her waist and gave his knuckles a squeeze.
“I am the surprise. –surprise!”
He gave her a dorky grin and then leaned down to press a quick peck to her cheek. He pulled away after a moment, but his hand quickly found hers and their fingers laced shortly after.
“I’m kidding. Don’t worry, you’ll see soon enough. It’s not far from here.”
The two walked along the path as he led the way, knowing exactly where they’d have to go to get to the location he was wanting to show her.
Through the forest, past a couple of sturdy trees– he helped her over a fallen log and then let go of her hand so that he could open up the brush for her that was hiding the surprise.
“–it’s just through here.”
When she entered, he followed behind – his eyes immediately glanced up at the very visible starry night sky. There was a tree that stood tall and a big branch that stood out from the rest.
“I don’t know if you’ve caught on, but we’re going up there. Come over here and I’ll give you a boost.”
Anna felt similarly, to be sure. Their romance was not new, but the officialization of it was sparkling with the sort of shimmery sights that only new love could have. She thought of seeing him and it gave her patience enough to wait the day out and pull off her little scheme without giving herself away.
So as she pulled her cloak closer around her shoulders, she looked around on the outskirts of Arendelle, peering over rocks and boulders, bushes and trees, to find him. She was excited, abuzz with the anticipation of her surprise and their reunion.
“Eugene?” She whispered, ducking her head ever-so slightly.
When he heard her call, he stepped out from behind one of the trees he’d been hiding out in. Ironically, he was behind her so he was able to sneak up on her and his arms wrapped around her waist ; a sigh emitted as he was finally where he belonged.
